Phew
No time to blog these last few weeks. Alex has made a final push in moving everything over to the new house these two days. Meanwhile Baby and I seem to be coping with going back to work full-time.

Those erupting teeth
She's had a couple of grizzly nights - and days - though with the emergence of her upper front teeth. Poor baby. They're both finally clear of her gums - never let her bite you - but oh the sleepless nights. Had to take a day off work last week because I couldn't face driving in and back after being woken up more or less every hour and a half the entire night. Also, she'd been running a fever.

This pattern was repeated this week but not to as great an extent. So the nursery got me to take her to the doctor to check her out and it seems she has no earache (though she jams her fingers in her ears occasionally) and her lungs are fine (though she coughs sometimes).

Anyway we are off to Italy for a week with friends so hurray! More blogging when we come back (and reconnect to our broadband in the new house). (And move our computer over.)

Arrivederci London, ciao gelato e cappuccino!

Summer!
We seem to have skipped spring. It's suddenly blazing outside and everything's in sharp relief in the bright sunshine. Took baby for a walk around the workplace grounds, pointing out the enormous pines, and the little primroses by the pond edge. She rattled a wind chime hung on a tree that's been planted in memory of someone here, and a hopeful duck swam up to us at the edge of the pond but we had no bread for it, too bad. (I kept a good three/four feet away from the edge, Mom, don't worry.)

All the children in nursery were sitting in the playground, with hats on, smeared with sun cream and sucking on red and orange ice lollies. It's quite lovely for them out there because there are lots of tall trees, which provide lots of shade. They all had huge smiles on their faces. Poor Boo is too small for ice lollies of course, despite her longing looks at the one nearest to her.

The sunshine explains why, despite major traffic jams in and around Reading today - because four Shetland ponies escaped and were causing havoc on the M4 - everyone I passed in their car didn't seem upset at all. It's a really lovely day.

Text from home
Wow today I received this gushing text from my mom about Bel and how well she looks likes she's doing. My cunning ploy to only blog about the good things is obviously working. But you all realise, I'm sure, there are trying times as well - like when she woke up five times the other night because, I think, her gums were painful, poor thing. Or last Friday's hellish journey home when they closed the M4 because of a bad accident and it took us three hours to get home and baby cried for the last two. My nerves were very, very frayed by the end of the trip. Or like when she just has to stand on my lap while I'm eating - sitting will not do - and she does the dance of pigeon-toed joy on it for 10 minutes, wiggling her little bottom each and every way and digging her toes and heels into my thigh. This happens most dinners.

Nonetheless it's still pretty safe to say the plusses way outweigh the minuses so I am still enjoying myself like mad regardless.

Anyway I also meant to note a few more things I couldn't remember last night. Another favourite noise baby makes is 'Nanananaanaa', which is the beginning of her being upset. If you can distract her before 'Nananaanaa' becomes 'MaamaaaaaMaamaaaa' and then 'Muuuumumm sob sob muuumuuum', you've probably staved off a tantrum.

There you are! There you are again!.. And again!
Also she not only plays peekaboo now, she can initiate the game and do the peeking. I first noticed this when I took her out in her pram last Tuesday evening to buy her nappies at Boots. She had a yellow blanket on her and when she started getting upset I used it to play peekaboo, hoping to distract her. Next thing I knew she gripped the blanket herself and, at first, I thought just buried herself under it by accident. But then she pulled it down and I went 'Oh! Peekaboo!' which got her giggling. So then she did it again. And again. And again. And again. Like earlier tonight:

Eat like a nonya
Oh and one other adorable thing she was doing tonight: she insisted on helping herself to the rice on my plate, after guzzling about four tablespoons of her own food (butternut squash and pea puree and lentils cooked in chicken stock plus some of our steamed egg, no seasoning). We wound up picking most of it off the floor afterwards of course but it was really quite worth it to see the delight on her face as she shovelled handfuls of rice in the direction of her mouth (not quite in it, just at it). Poor Boo - doesn't the camera flash make her look gormless?
